As long as there is a Porsche 981 Boxster rental car available in mainland Europe, we will have one on our website. Because despite it is now already an older model it still remains one of the best true driver’s cars out there. This car is a fantastic option if you want to spend a little less on the car rental, but still get something fun to drive on the best driving roads.
We have driven both big supercars and smaller sports cars on the driving roads that are included in our driving tours. One of the most important things to remember is that you do not always need 500 horsepower to have fun. The feeling of driving a powerful supercar can not be described – it should be experienced. But there are plenty of roads where we have also had more fun being in a small entry level Porsche – that is still a quick car, and also one of the best handling sports car you can experience thanks to it’s mid-engine layout that gives it a nice balance through the corners.
The third generation Porsche 981 Boxster, in production from 2012 to 2016, is the last naturally aspirated Boxster from Porsche. In 2016 both the 981 Boxster and 981 Cayman were replaced by the new 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, and Porsche decided to drop that naturally aspirated six cylinder flat-6 engine and replace it with a more efficient turbocharged four cylinder engine. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are great driver’s cars as well, but they do not sound like a 981.
We think the 981 is one of the best sounding sports cars – at higher rpm:s especially. That engine note is lost in a 718, and while the low-end torque is one of the advantages of the 718, we still believe many purists will appreciate the sound of a 981. We can offer a 981 Boxster S model for our driving tours from Switzerland, or a 981 Boxster GTS model in France. The 981 Boxster S gets 311 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque from it’s 3.4L engine, and in the GTS you get an additional 15 horsepower – 326 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h happens in 4.7-5.0 seconds (PDK) and top speed is 277-279 km/h.
But as we said power is not everything when you have the right type of road in front of you. On tight mountain roads where road width is limited and the hairpins require sharp turns and good handling, you will have an enormous amount of fun seated in a Porsche 981 Boxster. There is a little less to get familiarized with as the proportions of this car is more what most people are used to in normal life – some of the supercars are much wider and lower. It is not as fast or as loud, but it is great fun!
