Gorges du Verdon
FranceGorges du Verdon – Provence, France. One of the best drives in the South of France is located in the Verdon Natural Regional Park in Provence, with the beautiful Lac de Saint-Croix and the dramatic ‘Europe’s Grand Canyon’ – the Gorges du Verdon (Verdon Gorges). Perched high up above the gorge are two balcony roads, one on each side of the gorge, both with breathtaking views. Driving the Gorges du Verdon The D952 between Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane is the main road and therefore more busy, however it does offer some stunning views. The D71 between Aiguines and Comps-sur-Artuby runs parallel on the other side of the gorge, and although there are no lane markings the width is mostly actually quite generous although there are some blind corners to watch out for, and it doesn’t experience as much traffic as the D952. Additionally there is a loop section called the ‘Route des Crêtes’ (D23), which can be accessed from La Palud-sur-Verdon on the D952. The D23 is a narrow, partly one-way stretch of panoramic road which doesn’t have great road surface but the views are spectacular – not for the faint-hearted. There are several gorgeous viewpoints on all of these three […]

Col de la Bonette
FranceCol de la Bonette – French Alps, France Col de la Bonette, located in the Mercantour National Park in the French Alps, is only a couple of hour’s drive from the seafront in Nice. It is the seventh highest paved road in the Alps at 2,715m, one of the most spectacular mountain passes in Europe, and has been featured on the Tour de France. At the summit of the pass there is a short loop around the Cime de la Bonette peak that takes you up to 2,802m above sea level – here you’ve reached the highest paved road in Europe, and although it is only a couple of kilometres long it’s still worth the small detour. Driving the Col de la Bonette The Col de la Bonette connects the town of Saint-Etienne-de-Tinée with the town of Jausiers, and is also part of the Route des Grandes Alpes itinerary through the French Alps. In total the distance between the two towns is about 42 kilometres, with tight hairpin bends and superb panoramic views from the road. Mont Ventoux
FranceOne of the best driving roads in France is the road that goes up on the mountain Mont Ventoux, all the way up to 1,912 m above the sea level in Provence. Venteux is the French word for windy and at the summit wind speeds as high as 320 km/h have been recorded, and sometimes the pass is closed because of those strong winds. However on a beautiful day this high mountain offers some of the most amazing panoramic views over Provence. Mont Ventoux is the highest mountain in this region and has been given the nickname “Beast of Provence”. The top of the mountain is bare limestone without vegetation or trees, and the landscape is very unique in this part of Europe. As a driving road it is fantastic – a beautiful mix of long straights and some thrilling corners before you get closer to the top, where you might drive through a layer of low clouds before reaching the weather station at the top. There is also a 15th century chapel on the top. Drive Mont Ventoux on our Provence & Grandes Alpes tour from Cannes: Driving Col du Mont Ventoux This road is very popular among road […]

Nivolet Pass
ItalyThe first time we saw photos of Nivolet Pass / Colle del Nivolet, a beautiful driving road in the Graian Alps and Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy, we could not believe a road could look that beautiful. The day we drove it ourselves we realized that not even the most beautiful photos can do the road justice, because it looks even more incredible when you have it all in front of you. Landscapes like this are hard to find elsewhere in Europe. It starts as a drive that resembles many mountain passes you have experienced. But once you reach higher altitudes the views become more breathtaking, and the road starts to feel more dangerous not only because the narrow width, but also because of the absence of any safety barriers. It is one of those roads you really wish you would at least once in your lifetime have only for yourself, so you could use all road width and just enjoy all the fantastic curves. Driving Nivolet Pass The interesting thing with Colle del Nivolet is that you are not going to end up here by accident – it is a dead end road that finishes in the Valsavarenche […]

Bernina Pass
SwitzerlandBernina Pass (Passo del Bernina) located on the border between Switzerland and Italy, connecting the alpine resort town St. Moritz with Tirano in Val Poschiavo, is a 365 days a year road. It does not mean you should drive it without proper winter gear in the coldest season, because when there is snow on the road there is a lot of it. However imagine yourself planning a road trip through the Alps early spring or late autumn. The majority of the scenic mountain passes are closed unless you are travelling between June and October. Your options are to stick to the open roads, and probably end up doing most of the drive on the highway, or find the mountain passes that stay open also in the winter. If you are looking for a sports car friendly Swiss mountain pass in April-May or October-November, and come equipped with summer tires only if you happen to just be crossing through the country and heading to a warmer place, Bernina Pass might be the road you should consider. What you could find there is a stunning winter landscape, a road framed by snow walls with some beautiful hairpin bends, yet the road surface […]

Col du Galibier
FranceUp in a remote region of the Graian Alps in France, on the famous Route des Grandes Alpes that includes several scenic drives in the French Alps, is Col du Galibier. Rising 2,645 m above sea level this road is the sixth highest paved mountain pass in the Alps. When you stand at the top the only thing you can see is a panoramic view over mountains – and some picture perfect road curves. Drive Col du Galibier in the summer and you will most likely have to share the road with drivers and bikers. Col du Galibier is often the highest point in Tour de France races and for that reason it attracts road cyclists who wish to put their skills on test. If you however choose to do what I did, and wake up early late in the season before the pass closes for the best chances to get to experience it alone, you might be in for a treat. That early morning second day of October it was almost like an abandoned road in the middle of nowhere. I continued north over more passes en route to Switzerland, but traffic never increased on any of the mountain […]

Grossglockner High Alpine Road
AustriaGrossglockner High Alpine Road – Austrian Alps, Austria Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse) in Austria is one of our absolute favourite roads in the Austrian Alps – and the whole of Europe – because of its breathtaking scenery as well as its smooth, gently sweeping tarmac – which makes the road perfect supercar territory. This scenic mountain pass is open from early May to early November, and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a lovely drive throughout the season. In the spring and late autumn you might experience the occasional brief snowfall, which usually melts very fast, and in the middle of the summer the meadows are green and everything is in flower. No matter when you go the drive won’t disappoint – it is one of those beautiful roads that you always want to return to! Driving the Grossglockner High Alpine Road The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, named after the highest mountain in Austria, is a toll road that lies on the border between Carinthia and East Tyrol. This beautiful driving road opens each year early May and closes for the winter season in early November. Although the toll booth does not open before 5:30-6:00 in the morning […]

Furka Pass
SwitzerlandFurka Pass – Swiss Alps, Switzerland Furka Pass is the legendary Swiss mountain pass that gained fame after it was featured in a car chase scene in the James Bond movie “Goldfinger” from 1964. An Aston Martin DB5 and a Ford Mustang climbed this scenic driving road, located in the Uri/Valais region of Switzerland. More than 50 years later the landscapes have remained almost the same, and this is most certainly a road in the Alps that those in search for the best driving roads in Europe should experience. It is many people’s favourite road, and it might become yours too. Driving the Furka Pass Furka Pass is situated close to other scenic roads. If you are approaching it from north you might drive over Grimsel Pass before arriving to the bottom of Furka, and if you approaching it from south it is possible you will find yourself on top of Nufenen Pass before reaching Furka Pass. In our personal opinion you will experience the most exciting climb if you are driving it from west to east, since this is where the tightest hairpins are located. Once you have reached the bend where the now closed Hotel Belvedere still stands […]

Route de Thorenc
FranceRoute de Thorenc, a driving road that also goes by the name Route de Gentelly, is a breathtaking balcony road in Alpes-Maritimes. This road is one of our favourite roads in South of France, and also one of the best driving roads in Europe if you ask us. Côte d’Azur is a wonderful driving destination because of the mild weather year-round, and Route de Thorenc stays open in the winter. Occasionally there might be snowfall since the road is high up in the mountains, but from March to November there are usually no driving restrictions. To reach Route de Thorenc you might drive over other scenic mountain roads as well. Col de Vence and Route Napoleon are two other great driving roads in the same area, and should definitely be driven as well. Drive Route de Thorenc on our Côte d’Azur & Monaco driving tour: Driving Route de Thorenc Perhaps you have seen photos of this road in car magazines, as it is a popular destination for car manufacturers to shoot their cars. No wonder as the tunnels carved into the rocks with a beautiful backdrop of the valley creates a spectacular image, with or without car. If you climb […]

Stelvio Pass
ItalyStelvio Pass – Italian Alps, Italy Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio, Stilfser Joch) in Italy is one of the most famous driving roads in Europe – and the world. It is the highest paved road in the Eastern Alps with an elevation of 2,757m above sea level, and the second highest paved road in the whole Alps. With around 60 hairpins in total it is a road that ended up on many road trip enthusiasts bucket lists after they saw the iconic Top Gear episode ‘In search of driving heaven’, with Jeremy Clarkson concluding that Stelvio Pass was “the greatest driving road in the world”. Those who have experienced the majestic Stelvio Pass once often hope to return, and those who haven’t yet experienced this legendary place should definitely add it to their to-drive list. With Colcorsa you can experience this fantastic road on our Swiss Alps & Stelvio driving tour, which takes you on a four day road trip from Switzerland to Italy in your choice of sports car or supercar, or the Italian Lakes & the Alps driving tour, where you depart from Milan and explore the Italian Alps and lakes. If you’d just like a quick blast […]

Nockalm Road
AustriaNockalm Road in Austria is one of the greatest driving roads we have ever experienced. No matter which direction you drive it up from, from Unterwinkl or Inner-Krems, satisfaction will be guaranteed. From both sides the drive starts with several challenging hairpins that resemble roads like Stelvio Pass and Grossglockner. But the higher you climb the more the landscapes open up, and the straight stretches of road increase. What starts with a drive through what feels like a dense forest suddenly becomes a drive in mountain landscapes where you have panoramic views to every direction. Drive Nockalm Road on our Munich & Austrian Alps driving tour from Munich: Driving Nockalm Road Like many other beautiful roads in Austria, Nockalm Road is also a toll road. It is usually closed for winter from end of October to early May. In the season a day ticket for a car costs €17.50, but before you drive out from the toll booth gates on the other side you can simply do an U-turn and drive it back in the other direction. That would be around 60 kilometres of pure driving pleasure, with so many bends that you will lose count. We can tell you […]

Cap de Creus
SpainThe drive on Cap de Creus, a peninsula and headland in Catalonia located 25 kilometres from the French border, is not a fast one. This narrow road in the Spanish National Park has a low speed limit, but we have chosen to feature it for its scenery, not for the joy of fast driving. We struggle to think of another place that looks like it – in Europe – and it is also a beautiful location for photo shoots. If you want to avoid meeting other cars on the road it might be a good idea to drive it early in the morning or late in the evening in low season. The Cap de Creus Lighthouse is the last stop on the road, and the building has now been converted into restaurants. The place attracts visitors from all over the world – who would not want to enjoy these landscapes – so expect a lot of tourists in the high season. The building stands on a breathtaking location on top of a cliff, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Plenty of parking spaces are available at the end of the road, and for those up for a small hike – and possibly […]

Superbagnères
FranceIn the French Pyrenees, just next to the border to Spain, there is a ski resort called Station de Ski Luchon-Superbagnères. The drive to Superbagnères starts from a town called Bagnères-de-Luchon, with a population of less than 3000 people. The drive to the top is 18.5 km at an average gradient of 6.3%, and even short stretches in excess of 10%. Six times there has been stage finishes in Tour de France here. And when you reach the top at more than 1800 m above sea-level, you can on a clear day even see a glimpse of the highest mountain in the Pyrenees – Aneto. Why did we think Superbagnereès deserves to be on our list of the world’s greatest driving roads? It is a dead end road and what comes up must go down the same road, and there is not much to see or do outside ski season. But that is why it is one of those roads that does not have that much traffic summertime. On the day we drove it in late September it was almost empty, and it was beautiful. Empty curves, good tarmac, stunning landscapes, and on top of the mountain pass the dramatic […]

Targa Florio
ItalyTarga Florio is a piece of race history located on the island of Sicily in Italy, close to Palermo. The road condition is sadly not that good, because landslides have washed away parts of the road, but driven with caution it also has some very enjoyable stretches. Targa Florio used different routes in the races but the one we have featured here is the 72 km route called “Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie”. The official start and finish would be in Cerda, but in our video we used the next town Caltavuturo for start and finish. The current state of the road sadly takes away from the driving joy, because going there in a low sports car is not recommended before they have repaired the road. If you want to do it anyway, drive very carefully, as you never know what is waiting for you behind the next corner. Not everything is bad though. There are some stretches that are in better condition, and some views that are so beautiful that it will make you think it was worth it to drive it. You are reminded of the Targa Florio race history in several places along the way, and we recommend […]

Nufenen Pass
SwitzerlandNufenen Pass (Passo della Novena, Nufenenpass) in the Swiss Alps is a road many miss out on, because instead of driving over Nufenen Pass they will drive on two other roads in this area – Grimsel Pass and Furka Pass. The likelihood that you would drive all three in the same day is not that big – if you do it, you would be driving an approx. 140 km loop that includes four mountain passes (Innertkirchen – Grímsel Pass – Furka Pass – Gotthard Pass – Nufenen Pass and back to Grimsel Pass, for example). However we think Nufenen Pass is a road worth a visit. It is one of the top locations in the area to watch the sunset in the summer – we know, because we have seen it and we did not want to leave. Rising 2478 m above sea level Nufenen Pass is the second highest paved mountain pass road in Switzerland after Umbrailpass. The road is between two cantons, Ticino and Valais, and connects Ulrichen and Airolo. We think the best hairpin turns are on the west side if you start the climb up on Nufenen Pass from Furkastrasse. After reaching the top of Nufenen […]

In Florence we have chosen for you what we think is the most beautiful hotel in the city – Four Seasons Hotel Firenze. This five star hotel has 75 rooms and 44 luxury suites, and is located in a lovely green part of Florence. The walk to Florence Cathedral takes only 15 minutes, but you can enjoy a peaceful location next to the botanical gardens of Giardino della Gherardesca during your stay. Four and a half hectares of gardens surround the 15th-century Palazzo della Gherardesca and the ex 16th-century convent, Il Conventino, where the rooms and suites are located. The decor will leave you breathless, and some of the suites are like walking in to a Renaissance home. There is also a 2-floor spa with a seasonal pool, and three different restaurants from which one has a Michelin-star. Another reason why we love the location is because it is an easy drive in and out of the hotel, without having to worry about passing through restricted traffic zones in the Historic Centre of Florence. There are beautiful driving roads already when you exit the city and arrive on the countryside. But the about 250 km round trip daily tours we […]
