With deliveries starting in June 2016, the Ferrari 488 Spider will be available this summer/autumn on our driving tours in Europe. It is almost identical to the 488 GTB, with the difference that the roof folds down in 14 seconds, and then you sit there with the sun in your eyes. Sounds good to us.
Getting rid of the roof also brings the sounds closer in a different way – and although the 488 GTB has received some critic that their new turbocharged engines are too quiet for purists, we like to think that the 3.9L twin-turbocharged will awaken when you drive it like a supercar should be driven. 659 bhp at 8,000 rpm and we would be surprised if you suffer from lack of power, and from 0-100 km/h it takes you in 3.0 seconds, with the wind in your hair.
The great feature of Ferraris is that they are built in Italy, where road reconstruction rarely seem to happen and some of the roads are in quite hideous shape. The smooth tarmac has been replaced with a patchwork of tarmac – different shapes, different sizes, different colours, different heights. But with the Ferrari 488 Spider that according to press reviews is a pleasure to drive on any kind of roads no matter condition, you will be pleased to hear that we believe the Ferrari 488 Spider really is a great car to do a road trip in.
By the end of the day you are sitting in one the most recent models from Ferrari, roof down, with the V8 working its magic behind you. Maybe you are in Italy and stop for a gelato, watching how enthusiastic locals flock around the car, and when you hear the magic words “bella macchina” you know you could not have made a better choice.
